This Fantasy Is Real… Is It?
October 7, 2008It’s just Tuesday, and my eyelids are like lead. If this keeps on I might prop ‘em up with toothpicks like in Tom & Jerry. Weird I tell ye! My eyes are droppin’ but my mind is up and runnin’…
I’ve been a fan of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow for quite a long time now. Of course, as with most people familiar with the man in black, it started of course by listening to Deep Purple. The main difference between the two bands, is that they play different types of music. Although Deep Purple has some neo-classical voicings, this is much more apparent with Rainbow. Also, much of Rainbow’s songs are less frenetic than Deep Purple, and of course they got Dio and Cozy Powell….
Ok enough band geekyness… Have I mentioned they’re more progressive?
*ok I stop*
Most people are familiar with ‘Temple Of The King’ - a bluesy song about a medieval guy from the rising sun, who in the year of the fox went to the temple of some king. Yes, that tune that plays quasi-endlessly in pubs. It’s kinda hard to reconcile good music with drunk man’s music. We Pinoys are such whackjobs for that matter…
…and then we have this.

A very beautiful and sadly, very unheard of song from Rainbow called ‘Street Of Dreams’. For a long time, I’ve known that this was banned from MTV because of the hypnotism part. And I knew that I had this song in my Rainbow CD, and even on my iPod. But I never really bothered… ’till I kinda forgot to switch songs and this one came on.
Voila! LSS.

Last Saturday while I was on the ferry to Cavite with Marshi, we kinda were watchin’ TV - channel 2 for that matter. On a certain show, they touted Sam Milby as a ‘rockcoustic’ artist…
Okey? Rock - ‘coustic?
As I understand, Rockcoustic is like playing rock music, acoustic style. Or mainly fronted by some dude with an acoustic, and a band playing ‘rock’ tunes… I just can’t pin this down. Melodic Death Metal or Glam Rock would have been easier.
He’s coming out with a new album (?) and is gonna have a duet with Arnel Pineda. You know, yeah, that guy who sounds like Steve Perry and a whole bunch of other rock vocalist legends. Damn APs good… But Sam?
I couldn’t really figure out how they attached the word ‘rock’ to him. I just don’t see it.
Stereotypical yes, but I guess there are people out there who know what I’m talking about.
We Pinoys really love making new genres.
Cueshe, Hale and a bunch of others got the monicker ‘Pogi Rock’… And now this ‘Rock-Coustic’. From a guy wielding an acoustic and strumming away. I heard how he “interpreted” ‘Only You’ - and now that he’s out as a ‘rock-coustic artist’, I wonder what symphony of destructing will he come up with that will spread like creeping death to kill the king and be the master of those puppets.
Rockcoustic? Artist?
Maybe it would be better termed as ‘Rockcoustic PERFORMER‘.
IMHO, an artist writes his songs, arranges his melodies and works on his album. He goes on tour, and when in the studion, experiments with various pieces of crap that would ‘improve’ his music. I’m gonna bet that this rockcoustic guy sits at home, his manager calls him to say that the chords are C-G-Am-F and then he’d make hisw way to the studio, sing [alright strum] with a back track and presto! The Filipino masses have been hit by a hit.
To quote Igan D’Bayan…
“I’d rather be hit by Halley’s Comet than hear a hit from one of those all cover albums” [Cosmic Chopsuey, ‘Bebop Obituary’, November 2004]
Sounds like I’m bitter. Nah. Just a bit bewildered about the Pinoy music scene. Well it is showbiz… And there’s no business like it!
Sorry SM fans, but it just doesn’t cut that way.
I don’t have signal on my phone! Mars is on her way to school. I hope she’s doin’ fine. *rururu* I can’t even text her anything.
Last Sunday, I went to Cavite [again] via the ferry [again] alone [wow!]. Hehehe. I dig that! Really diggin’ - and I’ll dig it more when I get something wicked! Yeahey! Like 4 days to go! I can’t wait! Four days to go and my 13th month would be gone. GONE!
GONE
It’s premium investment though.
Just ran out of shiz to write.

Ah c’est la vie!
